LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The College of Saint Rose women’s basketball team won its season opener for the 11th time in 13 years this afternoon with a convincing 79-48 victory against University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in the first round of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament. The Golden Knights will play at 3:00 pm tomorrow in the championship game against the winner of today’s second contest between host Lincoln University and Briarcliffe College.
Senior center Lauren Revesz and freshman guard Ashley Rath paced four players in double-figures for Saint Rose (1-0) with 14 points apiece. Senior guard Dana Brown tossed in 10 points as did junior guard Elizabeth Buckley.
Senior forward Allison Weiss led the Devils (0-1) with 16 points behind an 8-for-9 shooting effort from the stripe. She also pulled down seven boards. Additionally, sophomore forward Marissa Chesnavich contributed eight points in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Golden Knights trailed 4-0 following a jumper by Weiss, however, Revesz finished off a conventional 3-point play and senior guard Suzana Sormaz buried a 3-pointer that put Saint Rose in front for good. The effort by Revesz sparked a 23-6 run that was capped off by a layup from Buckley to make it a 23-10 affair with 6:19 to go.
The second stanza began with a 12-2 jaunt by the Golden Knights that left no doubt as to the final outcome. Brown and Buckley combined for nine of 12 points during the spurt, the only other bucket coming on a deep ball from Revesz.
Saint Rose connected on 47.0 percent (31-for-66) of its attempts in the game and limited USP to 35.7 percent (15-for-42) shooting from the floor. The Golden Knights held a commanding 36-18 margin in the paint and also buried 9-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc, thus improving to 6-2 in season openers under eighth-year head coach Karen Haag.
