ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women’s soccer team had three of its members garner weekly accolades from the Northeast-10 Conference this afternoon. Sophomore midfielder
Amanda Schweers was chosen as the Player of the Week, junior keeper
Shannon Murphy was named Goalkeeper of the Week and freshman midfielder
Christina Cuffari earned Freshman of the Week plaudits.
Schweers tallied three points on one goal and one assist during a 2-0 week for the Golden Knights (18-3-2). All three points came in a 4-0 victory at 10th-ranked Franklin Pierce on Sunday in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament. Schweers set up the game's second goal in the 10th minute and then drove home her first marker of the season in the 75th.
Murphy did not surrender a goal in 180 minutes of action that covered two NCAA Tournament victories. She finished with five total saves and a 1.000 save percentage in both shutouts. Murphy turned aside two shots in a 2-0 victory against Georgian Court in a first round contest on Friday. She then stopped three shots to pick up her eighth clean sheet of the season in the aforementioned 4-0 triumph at Franklin Pierce.
Cuffari scored what held up as the game-winner to beat the Ravens on Sunday. It was her fifth goal in seven games and the second game-winner of her career. She is currently tied for the team scoring lead with 18 points behind seven goals and four assists.
Saint Rose is scheduled to play the University of Bridgeport on Friday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The match will be played on the campus of West Chester University at 1:30 pm. It marks the fourth regional final appearance for the Golden Knights within the past six years.
