ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose has the greatest representation on the 2009
ESPN The Magazine District I Academic All-America® Team that is administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Four players from the Golden Knights (19-0) undefeated squad are among 34 student-athletes, representing NCAA Division II and III institutions throughout New England, New York State and Southeastern Canada, who have been recognized for excellence in both academics and athletics.
Junior back
Kelly Guerin earned first-team accolades and thus her name will be forwarded to the national ballot. The 2009
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Team is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, November 17.
Aside from Guerin, junior back/midfielder
Coco Ebersole was chosen as a second-team selection; while sophomore midfielder/forward
Christina Cuffari and junior back
Katie Whiting both garnered third-team accolades.
Guerin and Ebersole are biology majors who carry respective 3.89 and 3.75 grade-point-averages (4.00 scale). Cuffari has a 3.65 GPA as a business administration major, while Whiting owns a 3.55 GPA as a Communication Sciences and Disorders major.
On the field; Guerin, Ebersole and Whiting are all vital components for a Saint Rose defensive unit that has shutout 12 of its last 13 opponents, including seven straight, and has surrendered a mere four goals all year. The Golden Knights stand second in the country with a 0.21 goals-against-average and have yielded only 31 corner kicks, while generating 140 of their own. Furthermore, Guerin and Whiting were both recently named first-team Northeast-10 Conference All-League picks.
Cuffari, who recorded a team leading eight goals as a freshman in 2008, is one of six players who have reached double-figures in scoring this year. She has 10 points on three goals and four assists for the Golden Knights who are one of only two unbeaten or untied teams (West Florida) in the nation. Saint Rose is also ranked #2 for the fifth straight week according to the most recent
NSCAA/Adidas Division II Poll.
Up ahead, Saint Rose will be playing in its eighth straight NE-10 semifinal Thursday. The top-seeded Golden Knights will host fourth seeded Merrimack (13-4-3). Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at The Albany Academies.
