WALTHAM, MA – The College of Saint Rose women’s team finished second among seven competing institutions and the men’s squad took third among six schools at the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Invitational that was hosted by Bentley University this weekend.
Southern Connecticut State outdistanced Saint Rose by 169 points to take the women’s team title and host Bentley was 70.5 points better than Southern in the men’s competition.
Freshman
Caitlin Brauer and sophomore
Caitlin Peterson led the Golden Knights women’s contingent. Brauer set school records in both the 400-yard individual medley and 200 breaststroke; and also won the 500 free. Meanwhile, Peterson had three second place efforts and a fourth place performance.
Brauer swam the 400 IM in a second place time of 4:38.96 and was third in the 200 breast behind a 2:28.46 clocking. She furthermore recorded a winning time of 5:16.89 for the 500 free to go along with a second place performance of 2:11.53 in the 200 IM. Peterson took second in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles with respective times of 25.64, 55.35 and 2:00.02. Peterson also finished the 200 breast in a third place time of 2:28.46 and swam the lead leg for the winning 200 free relay quartet that hit the wall in 1:44.87.
As for the men, sophomore
Vadim Yafayev had three individual second place efforts and was part of three; top-three relay squads; as was sophomore
Bryan Shaver who also won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:01.65.
Yafayev swam the 200 and 400 IM in respective times of 1:59.30 and 4:15.56, and completed the 200 breast in 2:21.00. He also anchored the winning 200 free relay team, which Shaver led off, that stopped the clock in 1:29.86.
Additionally, sophomore
Ryan Brauer broke a 15-year-old school record with a winning time of 16:47.11 in the 1,650 freestyle and also had a second place time of 53.61 in the 100 fly.
Junior
Jonathan Kruger and freshman
Joseph Krok were also part of three, top-three relay teams. Krok additionally had a third place time of 1:05.18 in the 100 breast, while junior
Matt Micha and senior
Joseph DiMilia were third and fourth in the 200 fly and 200 breast respectively. Micha swam the 200 fly in 2:04.38 and DiMilia had a 200 breast time of 2:25.56.
Other top performances for the women included that of freshman
Erin Ludeke who was part of a pair of top-two relay squads, while her classmate
Naomi Woodcock was third and fourth in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes respectively. Woodcock swam the 100 in the 1:10.72 and completed the 200 in 2:35.72.
Up next, Saint Rose is off until the New Year. The Golden Knights will visit Queens College for a dual meet on Wednesday, January 13 at 4:00 pm.
