ALBANY – Three student-athletes from The College of Saint Rose have been selected as recipients for the 2008 NCAA Division II Cross Country All-Academic Award from the
U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Graduate student
Pat Cullen and junior
Zach Phelps were recognized from the men’s squad, while sophomore
Courtney DeLorenzo was honored from the women’s club.
Furthermore, both Saint Rose teams were honored for their outstanding academic record. The Saint Rose men’s team maintains a 3.27 (4.00) cumulative grade point average, while the women’s squad owns a 3.10 cumulative GPA.
DeLorenzo boasts a 3.97 GPA as a communications sciences and disorders major. She finished 44th among 139 competitors at the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Championships and was 50th in a field of 166 runners at the NCAA Regional Championship Meet last fall.
For the men, Cullen finished his undergraduate work in computer science with a 3.59 GPA and is scheduled to complete his MBA studies in April. Cullen had the top Saint Rose finish at the NE-10 Championships with a 35th place effort, wile Phelps, a history/political science major with a 3.57 GPA, crossed the line 37th among 125 entries. At the NCAA regional, Cullen and Phelps were 33rd and 54th respectively among 167 competitors.
A total of only 138 NCAA Division II male student-athletes received USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic honors, representing 68 Division II institutions, while merely 243 Division II female student-athletes from 101 schools were recognized.
To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least 12 semester/quarter hours through the semester of competition at the institution to be eligible. The student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA and have placed in the top 30.0 percent of the total number of athletes eligible to compete at the respective regional championships, or in the top 50.0 percent of the field at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.
