Matt Horton walked into the clubhouse in a tie for 53rd place this afternoon among 108 individual entries after round one at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Golf Tournament. The event, which features 20 teams and eight individuals from the two regions, is being held at the par-72; 7084-yard Cobb Course at The Glade Springs Resort.
Horton stands 10 shots behind today’s co-leaders with an 82. Sean Burke of Ohio Valley University and Brian Williams of West Liberty State each carded an even-par 72 to grab the top spot after 18-holes. Meanwhile, Fayetteville State University turned in a team score of 304 to take over first place in the team standings by five shots over West Liberty State (309).
Horton played the back nine first this afternoon and made the turn with a three-over 39. He bogeyed the first three holes of the day, but sunk a 10-foot birdie putt on the 15th and made par on the final three holes of his first nine.
In his final nine holes of the afternoon, Horton was hampered by double-bogeys on holes five and nine to close things with a five-over 43.
Horton and the rest of the NCAA field continue play tomorrow in second round action. Horton is scheduled to tee off at 8:10 am, this time from hole number one. Live scoring for the tournament is available at
