DANIELS, WV – The College of Saint Rose freshman Matt Horton wound up 95th among 106 individual entries at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional that wrapped up this evening. The three-day event was played at the par-72; 7084-yard Cobb Course at The Glade Springs Resort.
Horton finished with a combined 254 (82-89-83) for the tournament. Emmanuel Charmat of Concord University was the top individual performer with a 224 (77-70-77), while Indiana University of Pennsylvania was one of five teams advancing to the NCAA Championships behind a 915 (317-300-298) to capture the top spot. Fayetteville State University, Concord University, Fairmont State University and St. Thomas Aquinas College also earned the rite to compete for a national championship as well.
Horton began second round play at 8:10 am Tuesday morning, but did not conclude his round until 3:40 pm in the afternoon following a rain delay. Periods of heavy rain throughout the noon hour suspended things, but play did resume at 3:10 pm. A total of 12 teams in the field were unable to conclude second round play before dark yesterday and thus restarted at 7:00 am today. Final round action did not begin until 11:20 am.
Horton was approaching the 17th green when the evacuation horns sounded, thus preceding a thunderstorm that swept through the region. Horton, a first-team All-Conference selection this past fall, returned some three hours and five minutes later to earn his par and bogey on the 18th for a five-over 41 on the back nine. He was hampered by a 48 on the front side for a second round score of 89, his highest score of the season.
Today, Horton followed an eight-over 45 on the front with a two-over 38 on the back to cap a six-hour round with an 83. The latter came via five pars and a birdie on the 18th.
