ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose has opened a season 6-0 for the first time in its 19-year NCAA era following tonight’s 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-11) non-league victory against visiting Concordia at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Saint Rose hit a blistering .391 behind 38 kills and 11 errors on 69 swings throughout a match that took a mere 54 minutes to decide.
The Golden Knights (6-0) set the tone by getting out to a 16-4 advantage in the opening set. They then rallied from a 10-3 deficit in the second by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to take a 16-12 lead, before going on a 10-3 run in the early stages of the final game that boosted a 10-7 lead into a 20-10 cushion.
In the second set, junior middle hitter
Kelly Ryan came up with a kill to tie it at 12-12. Sophomore outside hitter
Sarah Kahrs followed with one of her own to put Saint Rose ahead to stay. A pair of Concordia (0-3) attack errors sandwiched around another kill from Kahrs made it 16-12 Golden Knights.
Kahrs wound up with a .600 hitting percentage with nine kills without an error on 15 attack attempts. Sophomore outside hitter
Marilyn Glamack, sophomore middle hitter
Chelsea Tyler and Ryan had six kills apiece. Glamack also had a team-high eight digs, while sophomore setter
Theresa Staulo handed out 27 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Chelsea Zurcher had three kills and junior libero Amanda Byrd came up with eight digs to lead Concordia.
Up ahead, the Golden Knights will participate in the East Stroudsburg Tournament in Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, Concordia will meet both host Franklin Pierce and Merrimack on Saturday in Rindge, NH.
