PISCATAWAY, NJ – The College of Saint Rose men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are sixth among 23 competing institutions in the combined team scoring following the first day of competition that concluded Friday evening at the Metropolitan Conference Championships. The three day event is taking place at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on the campus of Rutgers University.
The Saint Rose women’s team accumulated 219 points on the strength of four school records including fourth place performances in both the 200-yard freestyle and 400 medley relays with respective times of 1:39.99 and 3:59.99. Additionally, freshman
Caitlin Brauer won the 200 individual medley in a school record 2:07.12 that furthermore automatically qualifies her for next month’s NCAA Championships in Canton, OH. Junior
Amy Lamparelli was sixth in that event with a championship provisional qualifying time of 2:10.06.
Sophomore
Stephanie Schuyler accounted for the fourth school mark by swimming the 100 backstroke in 1:00.03, which came via the opening split in the 400 medley relay.
Brauer and sophomore
Caitlin Peterson both swam the 200 free and 400 medley relays. Lamparelli rounded out the 400 medley relay quartet, while junior
Alicia Robinson and freshman
Naomi Woodcock swam the middle two legs for the 200 free relay team.
The men’s day was highlighted by the eighth place time of 3:38.32 in the 400 medley relay. Freshman
Vadim Yafayev continued his assault on the school record book with an opening split of 52.03 for the 100 back. His time was nearly 1.5 seconds faster than the previous mark that former All-American Matt Kavanaugh set in 2005. Yafayev was followed in that event by senior
Joseph DiMilia, freshman
Joseph Krok, and sophomore
Bryan Shaver.
The meet is scheduled to continue tomorrow with preliminary heats getting underway at 9:30 am. The finals session is set for 6:00 pm.
