NEW HAVEN, CT - The College of Saint Rose women's swimming and diving team registered three, second place efforts to put itself in second place after day one at the Northeast-10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships that are being hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. Meanwhile, the men's squad positioned itself in third place among seven institutions with six events in the books.
The women recorded 200.5 points and trail the host Owls, who registered 320 points to take a commanding advantage with two days of competition remaining. The men's contingent picked up 159.5 points to fall in behind Southern Connecticut (227) and Bentley University (269.5).
For the women, freshman Caitlin Brauer established a school record in the 200-yard individual medley after hitting the wall in a second place time of 2:08.58. She was also part of two relay squads that established school marks. Brauer anchored the 200 free relay quartet that was the runner-up in 1:40.58 and swam the second leg on the 400 medley relay team that shaved three seconds off the school record with a time of 4:00.56.
On the men's side, sophomore Vadim Yafayev chalked up the Golden Knights' first title of the meet by winning the 200 IM. Yafayev twice bettered the NE-10 meet record in the event and in the process swam an NCAA qualifying time in 1:53.10.
Day two of the league meet will begin with preliminary heats tomorrow morning followed by another round of finals tomorrow evening.
