NORTHAMPTON, MA – The College of Saint Rose men’s indoor track and field team swept all three relay events to spearhead a third place finish among 13 teams at the Smith Tartan Invitational that was held on the campus of Smith College today. Meanwhile, the women’s squad had two student-athletes record first place finishes to help the Golden Knights take fourth among 15 competing institutions.

For the men, senior Kevin Jackson had a standout meet after leading the 4x200-meter relay team to a victory in a time of 1:31.47. Jackson also captured the 55m hurdles in 7.81 and chalked up a measurement of 12.53-meters to win the triple jump.

The 4x400 and 4x800 relay squads also came out on top during the meet. Sophomores Charles Karam and Ryan Saunders teamed up with freshmen Umar Hasan and Charles Gilreath for a time of 3:27.68 in the 4x400. The 4x800 quartet that crossed the line in 8:08.24 was comprised of seniors Tyler Gantz, Kevin Flynn, sophomore Macky Lloyd and freshman Mike Corrado.

Additionally for the men, Lloyd wound up winning the 1,000m in a school record 2:30.01, Gantz was second in the 800m behind a 1:56.00 clocking, Saunders was the runner-up in the 400m with a school mark of 50.47; and senior Brandon Madigan was victorious in the 5,000m in a time of 16:16.81.

On the women’s side of the ledger, senior Ann Palmer put together solid all-around performances in the 200m and long jump while running the lead leg on the 4x200 relay team that crossed the line third in 1:53.16. Palmer won the long jump behind a leap of 4.94-meters and wound up second in the 200m after stopping the clock in 27.96.

A pair of school records also fell on the women’s side. Senior Melissa Bredice bettered her own mark by three seconds in the 5,000m after capturing the race in 19:21.69, just four seconds ahead of teammate and freshman Liz Dalia. Also, freshman Cathleen Green ran a 9.14 preliminary heat in the 55m hurdles and then finished in 9.17 in the finals to etch her name into the Saint Rose record books.

Both squads will have 12 days to prepare for the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championships that are being held on February 18. The meet is being held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
