NEW HAVEN – The College of Saint Rose women’s swimming and diving team had its best finish ever and sophomore
Vadim Yafayev was named the men’s Most Valuable Swimmer at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships that concluded tonight on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. The Saint Rose women’s contingent took second place among eight competing institutions, while the men’s team finished third among seven squads.
The Saint Rose women were 256 points behind the host Owls with a team score of 732.50, and were 208.50 points better than third place Le Moyne. In the men’s meet, the Golden Knights recorded 526.50 points to finish 216.50 behind second place Southern Connecticut State. Bentley took the overall team championship with a final score of 818.50.
The women practically rewrote the school record book with five more school records today to run their total to 15 throughout the weekend. Freshman
Caitlin Brauer broke her fourth school record and met an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard for the fourth time as well with a second place time of 17:34.81 in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Furthermore, junior
Amy Lamparelli met a provisional standard for the second time this weekend by breaking her own school record with a second place time of 2:09.52 in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore
Caitlin Peterson further elevated her 2009-10 credentials by snapping a 17-year-old school mark with a second place 54.87 clocking in the 100 free, while freshman
Erin Ludeke swam a school record fourth place time of 2:09.70 in the 200 backstroke.
In the meet’s final race, the Golden Knights 400 freestyle relay team of freshman
Naomi Woodcock and junior
Alicia Robinson, along with Peterson and Brauer, touched-out host Southern Connecticut by 0.21 while erasing five seconds off the previous school record with a 3:39.44 clocking.
As for the men, Yafayev stood out by setting meet records in the both the 200 and 400 IM throughout the weekend. He reached the NCAA Championship automatic qualifying standard with a 1:55.75 clocking in the 200 on Friday, and then pulled off the same feat Saturday by going 4:02.04 in the 400. Today, Yafayev added to his resume by touching second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:10.05 clocking.
Furthermore, sophomore
Bryan Shaver swam a fourth place time of 1:59.35 in the 200 backstroke and then swam the lead leg for the 400 free relay quartet that hit the wall third with a 3:16.98 clocking. He was followed by freshmen
Joseph Krok and
Michael Vogelsang, and junior
Jonathan Kruger.
Up ahead, Saint Rose will spend the next two weeks preparing for the season-ending Metropolitan Conference Championships that are set for Friday, February 19-Sunday, February 21 at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ.
