ALBANY – Brian Beaury will have his already extraordinary resume further bolstered by his induction into the New York State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. The induction will take place at 11:00 am this Saturday, March 27 in the Heritage Hall of the Glens Falls Civic Center. He will be one of eight coaches being inducted Saturday and will join such iconic figures as Jim Boeheim, Lou Carnesecca, and Nat Holman who have previously been enshrined.
Beaury, who just completed his 24th year as head men’s basketball coach at The College of Saint Rose, has developed a program that garners the utmost of respect from every corner, on every level of the collegiate game.
He became just the 34th NCAA Division II head coach to reach the 500-win plateau two years ago and has furthermore established the Golden Knights as a traditional power within the Northeast-10 Conference, which has sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six seasons.
Beaury has compiled a 517-218 (.703) career record, has earned Coach of the Year plaudits on five separate occasions and was nominated for National Coach of the Year in 1989 when the Saint Rose program was still part of the NAIA. He stood ninth among the nation’s most successful NCAA Division II coaches in terms of victories entering this past season. Beaury subsequently went on to lead a young 2009-10 Golden Knights squad, which had six underclassmen among its top-seven scorers, to a 16-12 overall record and a sixth place showing in the NE-10 with a 13-9 league mark.
Saint Rose won five consecutive regular-season East Coast Conference (formerly the NYCAC) titles, prior to its entrance into the NE-10 in 2000-01. The Golden Knights have been awarded 11 NCAA Tournament bids throughout their 19 years of competing exclusively at the NCAA Division II level. Saint Rose has also captured three NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional Championships on the way to three “Elite Eight” appearances and a trip to the “Final Four” in 1998. Furthermore, the Golden Knights advanced to the ECAC Championship Tournament in four of their non-NCAA Tournament years and came away with titles in both 1993 and 2001.
Additionally, Beaury’s teams have qualified for postseason play in each of his 24 seasons and have won eight conference titles. Saint Rose has also played on national television, has had just one losing season under his tutelage and has won at least 19 games throughout 20 of his 24 years on the bench.
The
Basketball Coaches Association of New York Inc. started the NYS Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991. Beaury was the Chairman of the original committee and designed the process. Glens Falls, home of the Boys NYSPHSAA State Tournament and the NYS Boys & Girls Federation High School Tournaments seemed a natural place to hold the inductions. A committee of interested Glens Falls persons chaired by Don Hall has moved the committee forward. The Basketball Coaches Association of New York currently selects the new inductees and conducts the ceremony. Commemorative plaques hang in the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Anyone interested in attending the ceremony on Brian’s behalf should contact
Mike Long, assistant men’s basketball coach at Saint Rose.
