ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose is represented by five student-athletes on three Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference teams in recognition of outstanding athletic and academic achievement from this past winter season. The teams were voted on by a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR) within the league.
Sophomore
Bryan Shaver was named to the NE-10 men’s swimming and diving Academic All-Conference team, while junior
Alicia Robinson and sophomore
Stephanie Schuyler were selected to the conference’s women’s swimming and diving Academic All-Conference squad. Furthermore, seniors
Kevin Jackson and
Tyler Gantz represent Saint Rose on the men’s track and field Academic All-Conference team. The quintet is among a small group of 62 student-athletes that were similarly honored from the league’s 16 schools.
Shaver had 13 first place performances on the year for the Golden Knights. He was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.35) and both the 200 (1:47.84) and 500 freestyles (4:53.34) at the NE-10 Championships. Shaver was also part of the third place 200, 400 and 800 free relay squads; as well as the fourth place 400 medley relay quartet at that meet.
A team captain who also received this honor a year ago, Robinson is part of three school-record holding relay teams. She finished tied for seventh in the 50 free (26.08/25.88 prelim), was seventh in the 100 free (56.11) and ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.13) at the NE-10 Championships. Robinson furthermore had a total of five first place performances in three different events this past year.
Schuyler broke her own school record with a preliminary heat time of 59.54 in the 100 backstroke at the season-ending Metropolitan Conference Championships that were held at Rutgers University. She subsequently swam a third place finals time of 59.58. A member of two school record holding relay squads, Schuyler was sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:13.65) and fourth in the 100 back (1:00.93) at the NE-10 Championships. A versatile swimmer who competed in eight disciplines, she had 11 top-three individual finishes throughout the 2009-10 campaign.
Gantz, who was named to the 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for cross country last fall; finished fourth in the 1,000 meter run (2:30.62) at this year’s NE-10 Indoor Championships. He was also named to the 2009 NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and owns the school record 600 meter (1:24.84) record indoors.
Jackson, who is making his second consecutive appearance on the NE-10 All-Academic Team, had seven individual first place performances this winter. He also took fifth in the triple jump (13.39 meters) and was sixth in the 200 meter dash (22.68) at the NE-10 Championships. Jackson holds six individual school records indoors and is part of the indoor school record 4x200 relay team as well.
In order to be nominated as an NE-10 All-Academic candidate, a student-athlete must have participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be a starter or significant contributor. He/she must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (4.00 scale) and must have completed at least one full academic year at her/his school.
